Race day!

Up early, almost all our mini mermaids met at our usual park. Bibs were distributed and to San Francisco we went!

All the girls were so excited. The race was well organized, in a beautiful location so it could only go well, and it did!
We are so proud of our mini mermaids, everybody put their best effort and crossed the finish line.
Pictures are worth a thousand words so check out the following album to see for yourself. If you have an album you would like to share, please put it in the comments.

It was a fantastic experience, we all feel very lucky to have been able to coach the girls for 6 weeks. There were lots of very strong moments and we hope our little mermaids will continue to grow beautifully inside and out.

Practice Race: so much fun!

What a race we had on Sunday! It was a fantastic event!

After registration where the girls got their t-shirt and bib, Stephanie did a very fun warm-up.
From Mini mermaid practice race 2011

After that, ur mini mermaids were energized and ready to race! So, everyone lined up at the start line...

They ran so well and best of all, they were smiling. I'm convinced that all the cheers from the family and friends helped tremendously. Emilie told me "I felt really good when they were cheering me up". So a big THANK YOU to all the families and friends who came to our practice race, it really meant a lot to all of us!

Everybody did really good, but we should congratulate Sydney who finished 1st!

Everyone finished these 2.5km and we are very proud of our mini mermaids!

Each girl got a goody bag given by Sonya Paz filled with some of her art items, some samples from SparkleHearts, headbands from RazzyRoo and ifitness, a chapstick, stickers... and a very cute charm that Stephanie made.

We're already more than 1/2 way through our program and cannot wait until the "real" race on November 12. This should be even more fun (if that's even possible...).
Again, thanks to our sponsors for their donations, thanks to my fellow coaches and thanks to all the parents for being so supportive!

What do mermaids eat?

This Thursday, the mini mermaids focused on nutrition.
Stephanie started our session sharing a great book "Eat healthy, Feel great" by Dr Sears. We learned about what types of food are good for us, what food is ok on special occasions and what we should avoid. We talked a lot about vegetables, fruits, protein, dairies, etc and contrarily to what I've seen on Jamie Oliver's show, our mini mermaids know tons of fruits and vegetables and already eat them on a regular basis. So this week's challenge (eat 5 fruits/vegetables a day) should be super easy for them! So Moms and Dads, make sure you replenish the kitchen with these fresh products ;-)

Oh, and of course we ran too...

Headbands for our runners

If you've been to a race recently, you've probably noticed that there is a big trend in wearing fancy headbands, tutus, funny socks etc. Why wouldn't we want to run with style? Well, thanks to RazzyRoo who has donated many cute headbands for our mock race goody bag, our mini mermaids will be able to follow that trend :) The headbands are very nice, I invite you to check out RazzyRoo's website to see the big choice they have. I'm sure you'll find something you like.
Thanks RazzyRoo!

These words..... THESE words - are garbage.

Today was amazing.

We've been discussing/modeling/making space for learning about Self-Talk. The positive (which we call Mermaidia) and the negative (Siren). Siren's voice says things like "oh that picture is pretty, it's almost as nice as so-and-so's picture" or "Gosh, you would look so beautiful if only your ____ was smaller/better/like hers" Get the picture?

And here's the heartbreaker - these girls are already really familiar with this voice. For some of the smaller girls it sounds more like this "why can't you just pick up your room? Good girls would do that. Helper girls would do that" etc...

And here's the hope - learning to hear that voice, identify that voice, well that is key to recognizing that it's all lies/half-truths/nothing to do with you.

So today the girls wrote themselves a letter, pretending that it was Siren writing it. They didn't share it. But afterwards, we gathered in a circle and talked about how that voice sounded really convincing. And it can sound like truth. And really - it's garbage. They tore the paper up. They THREW the pieces in the trash. And then - get this - they SPIT on the pieces. Because those were garbage words. False words.

And now - we look at these girls. For one moment they were free. There was talk of "Oh man! That felt SO good!" There was Fierce ripping - Powerful Throwing Down. Freedom of negativity. And to celebrate? We ran for 15 minutes.

To wrap it up - they wrote another letter - this time, from Mermaidia. One that would say "I love you for you."

Crazy part - these kiddos - ages 6 through 10 - need no help with their writing. They journal for them. And they have a lot to say.

Next week - service project (we're picking up the park where we run) and the MOCK RACE!!! Can't wait!

Mock race goody bags donated by Sonya Paz

We have some exciting news regarding the mock race that will take place on October 23rd.
Sonya Paz, an amazing local artist will donate goody bags with some of her creations for the girls. This comes in addition to our previous items from iFitness and SparkleHearts, I think our little mermaids' efforts will be well rewarded.
If you don't know Sonya Paz's artwork, check out her website:, her blog: or follow her on Facebook
I personally love her creations :)

Or even better, visit her gallery in Campbell:

Session #3

Some pictures from today's session. Again, we had lots of fun and run/walk 2 miles!
